You don’t have to navigate this alone.

If this topic resonated with you, let’s talk about how we can support you on your journey.

Why Rest Feels So Hard, Even When You Crave It

Summer is here! Schedules become lighter, and many of us try to rest. For some people, rest doesn’t feel relaxing at all. Instead, it can feel uncomfortable, unsettling, or even anxiety-provoking. If you’ve ever found yourself unable to relax despite being exhausted, you’re not alone.

When we spend most of the time operating in a state of productivity stress, or caregiving, our nervous system adapts to being “on.” We get used to moving between tasks, solving problems, meeting deadlines, and taking care of everyone. Being busy becomes normal.

When activity suddenly stops, our minds and bodies don’t always know what to do. Without the usual routine, worries may become more noticeable. Feelings we have pushed aside may rise to the surface. Some people even feel guilty when they’re not being productive. If slowing down feels difficult, try these simple strategies:

  • Start small. Rest doesn’t have to mean an entire day off. Begin with 10–15 minutes of intentional downtime and ask yourself how you feel.
  • Choose activities that restore you. A walk, reading, gardening, listening to music, or sitting outside can all be forms of rest. In addition, notice self-judgment. If thoughts like “I should be doing something” arise, gently remind yourself that rest is productive too.
  • Put away distractions. Scrolling can keep your mind activated rather than refreshed. Yes, it’s hard, but again, start small!
  • Schedule rest. Treat it as an appointment rather than something you’ll get to later. Put it in your calendar and honour the commitment.

Rest is not a reward for working hard enough. It is a biological need that supports emotional well-being, resilience, and overall health. This summer, give yourself permission to slow down. You may discover that taking care of yourself is one of the most important things on your to-do list. For help reinforcing the value of rest and to learn how to incorporate it into your life, reach out to a therapist. We can help you prioritize yourself and put the “shoulds” and chronic activity into perspective.
