You don’t have to navigate this alone.

If this topic resonated with you, let’s talk about how we can support you on your journey.

When Is It Time to See a Therapist?

One of the most common questions people have about therapy is: “How do I know if I actually need it?”

The truth is, there isn’t a specific level of struggle you need to reach before seeing a therapist. You don’t need a diagnosis, a crisis, or a major life event. Sometimes, the best time to reach out is when you notice that something just isn’t feeling quite right. Or when you know it’s time to tackle life differently. Knowing when to see a therapist isn’t always obvious, especially when you’re still managing work, relationships and everyday responsibilities.

Signs It May Be Time to See a Therapist

Maybe you’re getting through your days, but everything feels harder than it used to. You may be feeling more anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, sad, or exhausted. Perhaps you’re overthinking everything, having trouble sleeping, avoiding things you used to enjoy, or finding yourself stuck in the same patterns.

Common Reasons People Go to Therapy

Therapy can also be helpful during periods of change. Starting a new job, becoming a parent, experiencing relationship changes, children leaving home, menopause, retirement, grief, or simply moving into a different stage of life can bring unexpected stress and emotions.

Relationships are another common reason people seek counselling. You might notice the same arguments happening repeatedly, have difficulty setting boundaries, struggle with communication, or feel disconnected from your partner or the people who matter to you.

And sometimes there isn’t one obvious problem. You may simply want to understand yourself better, develop healthier ways to manage stress, or make changes in your life.

So, here’s a therapist tip:  If something (anything or anyone!)  is affecting your quality of life, relationships, work, sleep, or ability to feel like yourself, talking about it with a therapist can be a helpful first step toward feeling more like yourself again. Therapists offer support in a way far different than that of friends and family, because your therapist will remain neutral, objective and invested in your development.

You don’t have to wait until things become unbearable to ask for support. Reaching out earlier can give you support as you begin making changes, rather than waiting until things feel unbearable. At Maratos Counselling & Consulting, we provide therapy for adults experiencing anxiety, stress, relationship concerns, life transitions, and other challenges. We offer in-person counselling in Brantford, Ontario, as well as virtual therapy throughout Ontario. We’d love to meet you and show you how therapy helps.

Not sure whether what you’re experiencing is a reason to consider therapy?

Download our Do I Need Therapy? Questionnaire, a simple four question reflection tool to help you think about what you’re experiencing, how it may be affecting your everyday life, and whether having some additional support could make things easier.

You don’t need a diagnosis or need to be in crisis to consider therapy. Sometimes starting with a few questions can help you decide whether having a conversation with a therapist might be helpful.
