Finding Small Joy in a Heavy World: A December Reflection

If Disney and Hallmark ran the world, December would have the magical ability to stop the stress and replace it with sparkle and joy. Since that’s not the reality, let’s talk about creating joy despite the stress.

The holidays come with an expectation to be “in the spirit.” But let’s be real: joy doesn’t require you to ignore reality, pretend everything is fine, or push away negativity. It simply asks that you make space for small moments of relief that can come from pausing to remind your mind and body that they can soften, even for a minute.

This month, take small steps out of the noise. It may look like turning off news alerts for an afternoon, choosing one holiday tradition to keep (and letting the rest go), or allowing yourself five quiet minutes a day to notice the season: the lights, snowflakes, the excitement in children, or the nostalgia that comes from hearing music that takes you back to simpler Decembers. These moments don’t change the world, but they can help you stay anchored within it.

Remember: you’re not required to feel joyful on command, but when you try to connect to comfort, humour, beauty, or companionship, the joy will come. Putting aside time to stop, breathe and take in these micro-bursts of joy during the holiday season is the goal.

The holidays don’t have to be all-or-nothing. You can be aware of suffering and still create room for light. You can acknowledge financial pressure and still enjoy a simple ritual. You can carry stress and still laugh with someone you love. Joy is a gift you can give yourself in December if you prioritize the little things that bring a smile, create connection or allow for reflection. And don’t forget that a therapist can help make this happen! It’s about finding the tools that work for you and learning how to put them in place or support you when this feels overwhelming. Joy isn’t an escape; it’s a resource.
